The inspiration behind the mural
Here is how Nneka describes the muse that led her to this mural concept.
“This mural entitled “Give Me My Flowers” is a contemporary approach to the intersection between art and activism. It is created in response to climate change resulting in warmer temperatures and sea level rise. “Give Me My Flowers” combines symbolism, portraiture and storytelling to create a collage of images that prompt a deeper appreciation for Mother nature. This larger-than-life figure holds an oversized bouquet of flowers symbolizing the reclaiming of nature. Traditionally, bouquets have been used in preparation for big ceremonies and memorable moments that bring people together. However, this beautiful floral arrangement acts as a metaphor for reclaiming control and authority. With man-made and industrial changes over the years, humans have attempted to dominate the landscape and have operated on greed and ignorance which we are now experiencing the effects of.
Anyone walking by this mural on the sidewalk or even passing through the narrow alleyway should not only be mesmerized by the color and beauty, but also feel a deeper appreciation for their environment and the essence of mother nature. This almost-intimidating, large portrait is paired with two delicate young girls on the garage doors of the building. This symbolizes the future and what is at stake if we do not act now.
Ultimately, this mural is meant to help Downtown Tampa and the wider areas, reconnect with the beauty and purity of nature but also understand that this can be reclaimed at any point in time through Mother Nature’s dominance.”
