At the GFA Collegiate Scholarship Ceremony, presented by HCI Group, five budding artists each were awarded a $3,000 scholarship and the accolades of GFA leadership. This was the first time scholarships were awarded separate from Festival weekend and it was made more special by each recipient being surrounded by loved ones. Special thanks to our jurors, Dolores Coe and Bruce Marsh who had the following to say about the scholarship program and their jurying process:
“We have both been very pleased to participate in the 2024 Gasparilla Scholarship selection process. As early participants in the Gasparilla Festival years ago, who have both spent our careers as artists and educators in this region, we have been so glad to see the festival develop the scholarship program and other community-based initiatives to directly support our area students and emerging artists. It’s a very meaningful investment and we are grateful for the vision and efforts of all involved. In our scholarship award review, we saw a number of applications very deserving of consideration—and a very broad variety of works. We based out final decisions first on our perception of overall quality in the multiple works, as represented in the application—that magical mix of skill, concept, unique perspective or twist, ambition—somehow coming together. We reviewed and considered all the support materials with an eye to the context of diverse programs and the applicant’s level of education at this point. We did our reviews separately—and then did it all again together. As opposed to jurying an exhibition of works of art only, the scholarship awards represent consideration and weighing of multiple factors. We hope that in addition to the very tangible scholarship funds, these awards are also a source of encouragement in their pursuit to the recipients. We hope, too, that all the applicants are encouraged to continue to submit to this and all other scholarship and other opportunities. If not this one, the next. Our best wishes to all these artists.”
