The Tampa Museum of Art’s longstanding partnership with the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts culminates each year with the purchase of an artwork for the permanent collection. For the past five years, the Museum Purchase Award has been juried by curatorial staff and the Executive Director. Recipients represent a range of media and the artists alternate from regional artists to artists based around the country. The 2024 Gasparilla Festival of the Arts Museum Purchase artist was selected by curators Dr. Branko van Oppen and Joanna Robotham. Together, they selected the painting Good Morning, Sunshine by Tallahassee-based artist Kelly Rysavy. The painting, an ethereal still-life of an unmade bed and morning light, complements existing contemporary works in the permanent collection.
A self-taught artist, Rysavy paints the passage of time. She draws inspiration from Renaissance painting and aims to capture light—both atmospheric and direct sunlight. Rysavy’s color palette incorporates muted tones of white, grey, blue, yellow, and green and she paints both landscapes and domestic interiors. Her beach scenes depict the tropical light of Florida, as well as the serene quality of palm trees and mangroves. Rysavy’s domestic imagery primarily focuses on the natural folds and creases of linens and textiles.
Good Morning Sunshine was included in the artist’s booth at the 2024 presentation of GFA. It was also awarded the Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts Award for Best in Show.
